Car Hire in Tivat

Porto Montenegro marina, Lustica Bay, and the fastest airport pickup on the Adriatic.

Tivat waterfront and Porto Montenegro

Tivat — Porto Montenegro and the Bay Gateway

Tivat sits directly across the road from TIV airport. Walk out of the terminal, cross the access road, and you are already in town. That proximity makes Tivat the most convenient base for anyone renting a car at the airport — you can park, check in to your accommodation, and head out exploring without fighting any traffic.

The town itself is compact: a 2 km waterfront promenade connects the ferry pier at one end to Porto Montenegro marina at the other. Most restaurants, shops, and cafes line this strip. The population sits around 15,000 year-round but swells considerably in summer when charter flights from across Europe fill the terminal daily.

Beaches Near Tivat

Tivat's 17 beaches span 3 km of coastline along the bay. The water is calmer here than on the open Adriatic coast south of Budva. Top picks:

  • Plavi Horizonri (Blue Horizons) — white sand, shallow entry, ideal for families. Located 2 km south of the marina, signposted from the main road
  • Lustica Bay resort beaches — 10 minutes south of the airport on the Lustica peninsula road. The development includes the Chedi hotel, a golf course, and managed beach clubs with lounger rental

Porto Montenegro

The marina occupies the site of the former Yugoslav naval shipyard and now berths 450+ vessels including superyachts up to 250 metres. The waterfront village has boutiques, restaurants, the Regent Porto Montenegro hotel, and the upcoming One&Only resort. A pool club, yacht club, and regular events (regattas, food festivals) operate through the summer season. It is walkable from TIV airport in about 15 minutes.

Beyond the Waterfront

Prevlaka Peninsula

A 10-minute drive south of Porto Montenegro brings you to the Prevlaka peninsula, where the ruins of the 10th-century St. Michael Archangel Monastery sit among olive trees. Archaeological work continues on-site. The peninsula also has a quiet pebble beach facing the open bay.

Gornja Lastva

A hillside village 3 km above Tivat, reached by a narrow switchback road. Stone houses, an old church, and a terrace restaurant with a panoramic view over the entire bay. It is the kind of place that rewards having your own car — no bus service runs here.

For maritime history, drive 12 minutes through the Vrmac tunnel to the Kotor Maritime Museum inside the Old Town walls. Combined with a walk around the fortifications, this makes a comfortable half-day trip from Tivat.
