Podgorica — 90 Minutes Inland from TIV
Two routes connect Tivat to Montenegro's capital. The fast option is the Sozina tunnel toll road: drive south toward Budva, turn inland at Virpazar, and enter the 4.2 km tunnel that punches through to the Podgorica plain. Total time: roughly 90 minutes, toll approximately 3.50 EUR. The free alternative is the mountain road over Lovcen — dramatically scenic but allow 2.5 hours with switchbacks and no overtaking.
Podgorica sits on the confluence of six rivers (Moraca, Ribnica, Zeta, Sitnica, Mareza, Cijevna) and has a population of roughly 170,000. The architecture reflects every era of occupation: Ottoman clock towers, Austro-Hungarian facades, Yugoslav-era concrete blocks, and new glass office buildings along Bulevar Svetog Petra Cetinjskog.
The city functions as Montenegro's commercial and administrative hub. It lacks the tourist density of the coast, which means lower prices, easier parking, and restaurant tables without reservations. For anyone with a rental car, it works well as a day trip or as an overnight stop en route to the northern mountains.
Practical Stops in Podgorica
The Millennium Bridge is the most recognisable landmark — a cable-stayed span over the Moraca. The old Turkish Quarter (Stara Varos) sits on the south bank with narrow streets, a clock tower, and a few traditional restaurants. Delta City shopping centre on the northern ring road has international brands, a cinema, and underground parking. For local produce, the Green Market operates daily near the central square.

Day Trips from Podgorica
Skadar Lake
Drive 30 minutes south on the Virpazar road to reach the largest lake in the Balkans, straddling the Montenegro–Albania border. Boat tours launch from Virpazar village. The lake is a national park, home to pelican colonies and 260+ bird species. Bring binoculars and mosquito repellent in summer.
Danilovgrad and the Zeta Valley
A quiet river town 25 minutes west of Podgorica on the E762. Riverside beaches along the Zeta River, a couple of fish restaurants, and the Zdrebaonik monastery 5 km north. Low-key, good for a half-day escape from the capital.
Zabljak
A mountain town at 1,450 metres in the Durmitor range, 170 km north of Podgorica via the E65. In winter: skiing at Savin Kuk. In summer: Tara River canyon rafting, Black Lake hiking, and the Durmitor ring road. The drive takes 2.5–3 hours depending on conditions — fill up in Podgorica, as fuel stations are sparse north of Kolasin.
